It’s a question we’ve been asking all summer, and we’ve finally been given an answer. Who are the Anaheim Ducks new alternate captains?

Leadership; one of the most important components of any successful team. As the Anaheim Ducks prepared for the 2019-20 season, we knew without a doubt that there would be a major shift in the paradigm. A new coach, a reconstructed roster, and a change in leadership was necessary to put last season in the past, and move forward to bigger and better things. We were given a new coach in Dallas Eakins, and with a new coach would come the refreshing changes to the lineup.

Nevertheless, we went into opening day still not sure of whom the Anaheim Ducks had chosen to replace Corey Perry and Ryan Kesler. Throughout the preseason, the “A” had shifted between a group of several players. We’d seen Hampus Lindholm, Rickard Rakell, Jakob Silfverberg, and Josh Manson, among others, wear the letter as a symbol of their newfound responsibility as the leaders of their team.

Josh Manson and Jakob Silfverberg to Wear the “A” in 2019-20

So, who are the Anaheim Ducks new alternate captains? Josh Manson and Jakob Silfverberg have been named as the two alternate captains for the 2019-20 season, according to Elliot Teaford of the Orange County Register. It is an incredible honor for the two to serve alongside Captain Ryan Getzlaf as the team’s on-ice mediators.

Over the course of the offseason, we took a look at both players, Manson and Silfverberg, and their case for wearing the “A.” Silfy earned his spot after stepping up last season when no one else on the team would. He’s proven that he can be versatile and adapt under the pressure. Manson is the most experienced of the group and his leadership style meshes well with that of Ryan Getzlaf. Together, the three of them will be great leaders, sharing the same vision as the season progresses.

Leadership is More Important to Dallas Eakins Than a Letter

It was a tough decision, choosing just two players to bear the “A.” While both Silfverberg and Manson have rightfully earned their new position, Dallas Eakins has made it clear that he won’t be looking solely to his captain and alternate captains to lead the team.

“Even though we have an excellent captain and two assistants, those three guys are important, but for me and our team, that group of leaders that includes (Cam) Fowler and (Hampus) Lindholm, (Adam) Henrique, (Rickard) Rakell and a couple of others, is more important to me.” –Dallas Eakins

While these four other players may not have a letter stitched intricately to their jersey’s, it is important to note that Eakins is expecting the same level of dedication from all of them. The team no longer has to question who should be stepping up because everyone now knows what is expected of them. The coaching staff has made is evidently clear who they need to lead this team.

Now that there is no confusion, the Anaheim Ducks, as a collective, can work on increasing the accountability throughout the roster. With a group of stable and consistent leaders, we’re likely to see a different hockey team this season. We may not see the best hockey team, but we can all be encouraged by the fact that they are all being held to higher standards this season. Teamwide accountability is a big step in the right direction, and that starts with a good group of leaders.
