Teemu Selanne’s video to Alex Ovechkin has reminded Anaheim Ducks fans why we love hockey.

Being a fan of any sport is hard work. You invest your time, money, and energy into a group of individuals and sometimes they make you proud, winning championships and titles. Other times, they let you down and you find yourself forgetting why you fell in love with your team or a sport in the first place. Such is the case with a lot of Anaheim Ducks fans this season, and Teemu Selanne‘s video to Alex Ovechkin may be just what the doctor ordered.

Over the past few days, Ovechkin passed Teemu on the all-time NHL goal-scoring list, scoring his 686th career goal. He is only a few goals away from passing up Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, and Mark Messier. Despite usurping Teemu and stealing his spot as number 11 on the list of career NHL goals scored, Selanne sent a message to Ovi, congratulating him for such a tremendous accomplishment.

"“You’re going to score a lot more goals, so keep it going and keep having fun; that is the key. And all the best!” -Teemu Selanne"

It was not only a reminder that Temmu is a class act, but it was a reminder as to why we love Ducks hockey. The Anaheim Ducks have been known by the rest of the NHL as a dirty team for years. That, however, has been their MO on the ice. Despite being dubbed as a dirty team, the Anaheim Ducks are actually a group of very respectable men. They give back to their community, and they support their fellow players, even if one of them were to surpass a very impressive record.

The Anaheim Ducks were so incredibly lucky to have a player like Teemu Selanne on their team for so many years, and there is a reason his jersey has been immortalized in the rafters. This is what the Anaheim Ducks need to live up to. No matter how their 2019-20 season is playing out, may Teemu Selanne’s example serve as a template of how to play the game and live their lives as professional athletes, role models, and public figures. The humble road is not the low road.

While we may not be Washington Capitals fans, especially after the “spit gate” incident, there is no denying that Alexander Ovechkin is the Wayne Gretzky of the modern game. So, we will follow Teemu’s example and congratulate Ovi on such a tremendous accomplishment!
