Jake Robles brings you another addition of Mask Mondays. This week he focuses’ on the beautiful, yet simplistic, design of Jonas Hiller’s mask from the Anaheim Ducks 2010-11 season.

Hey folks! I’m here to bring you guys your weekly dose of goalie masks with another Mask Monday! This week, we’re taking a look at Jonas Hiller‘s all matte black mask from the Anaheim Ducks 2010-11 season.

For this one, I’m going to stray from my normal ways of critiquing and rating the mask and focus more on how despite its lack of intricate details, it’s a very nicely done mask.

As previously mentioned, this mask painted by Alec Voggel of Airxess is different than the previous masks I’ve covered so far due to the fact that its simple and has very little detail on it. Jonas went on record saying that this mask was actually a prototype but he got a lot of positive reception from his teammates on the Anaheim Ducks, and fans alike, that he decided to just keep it the way it was.

It just goes to show that sometimes, masks don’t have to be super extravagant and packed to the brim with details. They can be simple as a coat of paint to cover the carbon fiber base of the mask and a bright gold cage.

I think goalies can sometimes get lost in all the ideas we have. We lose sight of the fact that it doesn’t always have to be like that. From personal experience, I can say I struggle with that problem 100%.

I’m currently in the process of brainstorming what I want when the time comes to paint my mask and I have to stop myself sometimes and tell myself to chill and really think about it and not include every little detail. It’s hard, especially when you’re like me and constantly thinking of new things and changing your mind every few days or so.

To get back on track here, I think its safe to say that it’ll stand as one of the best masks in franchise history. It’s a very iconic look for a very unique goalie that’s super recognizable, no matter the name you call it by.

It was different and it was bold. It was like the perfect “back to basics” design in a league where everyone goes above and beyond with their art.
