It was announced on Wednesday that right wing, Corey Perry, would be sidelined for the next five months following knee surgery. He is slated to make a return in February, but this is a big hit to the Anaheim Ducks.

On September 24th, the Anaheim Ducks were set to face off against the Arizona Coyotes in their fourth preseason game. The projected line up prior to the game was starting to look more like what we could potentially see during the regular season. With Corey Perry in the lineup, everyone was ready to get a good look at the steps he had taken to improve over the summer.

However, tragedy struck when the 33-year-old right wing was injured during pregame warmups. He was pulled from the Monday night lineup. It wasn’t really necessary for him to play in a preseason game, so most people thought he was sidelined for precautionary reasons.

Nevertheless, our worst fears were confirmed on September 26th. The news broke that Corey Perry had undergone knee surgery Wednesday morning to repair damage to the meniscus and MCL in his right knee.

Say what you want about Corey Perry, but his numbers don’t lie. His stats may have been on a slight decline compared to previous seasons, but he is still one of their top point producers. This means that the Ducks are without yet another top-tier veteran powerhouse, and the Ducks have to come up with a quick solution.

His most recent injury and surgery may possibly explain why Corey Perry slowed down significantly last season. On December 12, 2017, Perry was out for almost a month with another knee injury. He came back in January and still produced, but he seemed slower than usual.

We all hope that he has a big comeback like a la Teemu Selanne, but that remains to be seen. His absence, however, will open up another roster spot that will need to be filled by a rookie. Although Perry’s presence will be missed on the ice, a youngster will be given the chance to gain experience and prove that they have what it takes to make it at the NHL level.
