Anaheim Ducks Assign Center Chris Wagner To AHL San Diego

The Anaheim Ducks announced Tuesday evening that they have assigned center Chris Wagner to AHL San Diego.

This announcement comes just days after the Ducks recalled top defensive prospect Shea Theodore and experienced blue-liner Korbinian Holzer. Theodore has since been reassigned to the AHL while Holzer remains with the Ducks to fill in for other injured defensemen.

Wagner has appeared in just one game so far this season, in much part due to the strong play of veteran fourth line center Shawn Horcoff who has pushed Wagner into the healthy scratch slot.

Wagner played 11 minutes against Colorado Friday night, finishing with a -1 rating and winning 53.8% of the faceoffs he took.

With Wagner being sent down and Clayton Stoner and Simon Despres remaining on injured reserve for the time being, the Ducks roster now sits at 21.

Boudreau said after practice today that Stoner appears ready to go while Despres may need more time after taking an illegal check to the head.

Stoner is likely to come off of IR soon and that will bring the Ducks roster up to 22, leaving room for one more player to join the Ducks which would bring the roster to the 23 player maximum.

Holzer will be sent down once Despres is ready which leads to the thought of a different forward prospect being called up to replace Wagner, filling the 23rd and final roster spot.

While it is uncertain what Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray’s plan is, there is no shortage of options for a possible forward call up.

Nick Ritchie has gotten off to an unbelievable start with the Gulls and Max Friberg has been overly impressive as well. The two are the frontrunners as of now if Murray decides to recall a different forward to replace Wagner.

Nate Thompson is likely nowhere near ready to return from offseason shoulder surgery so it is likely that a prospect recall will ensue at some point during the upcoming road trip.

Kenton Helgesen remains on the Ducks roster but was also placed on the injured reserve list with Thompson to begin the season. Helgesen’s return is uncertain and it is also unknown if he will be staying with the Ducks once healthy. It should be noted that he plays primarily on the wing.
