NBC should do hockey fans a favor and keep their blowhard off-camera for Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.
If you are an Anaheim Ducks fan who didn’t loathe NBC Sports Network’s Mike Milbury before last night, chances are good you will now!
In case you missed what Milbury had to say during one of the intermissions of last night’s Eastern Conference Game 2 between the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning, here it is, followed by a few reactions:
Lovely. I think we can all agree that, for the most part, Milbury is an idiot. NBC, you clearly don’t understand the sport of hockey well enough if you feel like Mike Milbury is your best bet for color commentary and analysis.
Still, you can mostly forgive someone whose only crime is stupidity, especially if they mean well. Clearly, Milbury does not mean well. No matter how NBC Sports and Milbury spin his comment, the bottom line is that Milbury comes from an era that the modern age has turned its back on.
Fans of hockey want to see a physical, hard-hitting game, and we understand that injuries often come about as a result of such affairs. But to encourage deliberately injuring an opposing player is something that should have gone out of vogue decades ago. There is no way to twist what he was trying to say: his inner goon has been exposed, and Mike Milbury should not be allowed to be anywhere near a camera during tonight’s Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals.
Whether or not NBC decides to suspend Milbury more is their call, but at the very least, bring someone else in to cover for him this evening, as no Anaheim Ducks fan should have to listen to him during the intermission reports tonight.
