After taking a hit from Penguins defenseman Rob Scuderi on Monday, Datsyuk underwent an MRI on Wednesday which revealed the separation in his right shoulder. He is expected to miss at least the first two weeks of the regular season.
Datsyuk, 36, has struggled with injuries as of late as he missed 37 games last season with a concussion and knee issues. In the injury-riddled season, Datsyuk tallied 37 points (17 G, 20 A) in 45 contests.
Detroit has been Datsyuk’s home since he was drafted in the sixth round (171st overall) of the 1998 NHL Draft. In 824 career games, Datsyuk has collected 272 goals and 532 assists for 804 points.
The Red Wings open up their 2014-2015 regular season against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 9. Boston eliminated Detroit in five games in the first round of last year’s playoffs.
