Jordan Staal Out Indefinitely With Broken Leg

Carolina Hurricanes center Jordan Staal broke his lower right leg in the Hurricanes’ preseason game against the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. Staal will be out indefinitely as general manager Ron Francis said he didn’t have a timetable for Staal’s return.

Staal returned to Raleigh, N.C., today and is expected to be evaluated by team doctors tomorrow.

The former 2nd overall pick is entering his third season in Carolina after six years with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Last season, Staal was able to suit up for all 82 games and finished with 40 points (15 G, 25 A). In 561 games between Pittsburgh and Carolina, Staal has tallied 145 goals and 174 assists for 319 points.

The Hurricanes lose one Staal but will regain another. Eric Staal, Jordan’s older brother, is expected to make his preseason debut next Tuesday according to head coach Bill Peters.

Carolina will look to improve on last season’s 36-35-11 record (83 points). The Hurricanes open their 2014-2015 campaign on Oct. 10 in Raleigh against the New York Islanders.
