John Gibson Up For Top Performance of 2013-2014

It didn’t take long for Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson to make a grand first impression in the NHL.

He immediately made his presence felt in his first career game as he recorded a shutout against the Vancouver Canucks on the road. Gibson followed that up by helping the Ducks claim their second consecutive Pacific Division title with a 36-save performance in a 5-2 victory against the San Jose Sharks.

Despite his success toward the end of the regular season, Gibson was sent back to Norfolk for the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. After an injury to Frederik Andersen in Game 3 of the Ducks’ second round series against the Los Angeles Kings, Gibson was recalled and given the nod in Game 4.

And that’s where Gibson proved that his previous quick stint in the NHL was no fluke.

With the Ducks trailing 2-1 in the best-of-seven series, Gibson shined and registered a 28-save shutout in a 2-0 Anaheim victory that knotted the series at 2-2. A few nights later, Gibson guided the Ducks to a Game 5 win at Honda Center by stopping 39 of the 42 shots he faced. The 21 year-old would play fairly well in a 2-1 loss in Game 6 in Los Angeles, but he struggled in Game 7 in Anaheim as the Ducks were eliminated from the postseason.

Despite the Game 7 loss, Gibson’s performance in Game 4 brought the Ducks back into a series that seemed like it would end fairly quickly after Anaheim lost the first two games at home. Gibson’s play in Game 4 is being recognized by the NHL Network and is currently up for “Top Goalie Performance in 2013-2014.”
