Anaheim Ducks Captain Ryan Getzlaf Sidelined 4-12 Days With Appendicitis

Just as things seemed to be getting better, adversity struck in the form of injury. Anaheim Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf will be sidelined for the next 4-12 days with appendicitis.

The Ducks announced Tuesday afternoon that the captain had been experiencing discomfort recently and appendicitis now appears to be the cause of that. Getzlaf has returned home to Orange County and will undergo a non-emergency appendectomy Wednesday morning.

It is unknown whether or not Getzlaf will be placed on injured reserve but it seems like the logical decision at this time.

Getzlaf will obviously miss Thursday’s game against St. Louis and it seems unlikely that he will be ready to play Sunday when the Ducks return home to take on the Nashville Predtaors. The Ducks next game after that would be Wednesday when the Florida Panthers are in town and if Getzlaf is placed on IR today or tomorrow, he would then be eligible to return for that game.

If that is the path Ducks general manager Bob Murray decides to take, it will likely result in the recall of a prospect. Max Friberg, Nick Ritchie, Stefan Noesen and Nic Kerdiles are the possible names you could expect to be considered.

The Ducks do have depth up the middle as Chris Wagner is back with the big club and will fill in as the fourth center tonight, so there may be no need to recall a prospect which would in turn create no need to place Getzlaf on IR.

Expect Rickard Rakell to center the Ducks first line for the time being as he and Corey Perry displayed some good chemistry during the preseason.

The Ducks are 30-17-6 without Getzlaf in the lineup since ’05-’06. Anaheim went 1-2-2 without the captain last season.

Stay tuned for more updates on Getzlaf.
