Some NHL records might appear to be insurmountable at first glance. Take Wayne Gretzky's 894 goals, for example. Among many of the records that Gretzky holds, that number seemed unachievable, until Alex Ovechkin surpassed that mark on April 6th, 2025. While records are meant to be broken, some are just unbreakable. Teemu Selanne, the Finnish Flash, has claim to one of those unbreakable records; goals by a rookie.
76 in '93
Selanne made his NHL debut with the Winnipeg Jets during the 1992-93 season and made an immediate impact, by notching two assists in his first game and scoring his first NHL goal the next game. The first major domino to fall in Selanne's quest for history, occurred on March 2nd, 1993, as he scored his 54th goal to surpass the previous record held by Mike Bossy. But Selanne never slowed down, and by the end of the season, Selanne set an NHL record for goals by a rookie with 76 and points with 132. Selanne deservedly won the Calder Trophy and was named to the All-Star team.
Closest Ducks comparable
While Selanne set the rookie goal record with Winnipeg, the Ducks became the team most hockey fans associate Selanne with, after his trade to Anaheim in 1996. The best offensive season for a Ducks rookie, was set by Bobby Ryan in 2008-09. Ryan scored 31 goals and was a runner-up for the Calder Trophy that season but was 45 goals short of the mark set by Selanne. In more recent years, the Ducks have had prolific playmakers, but not necessarily goal scorers. Trevor Zegars scored 23 goals his rookie year, Leo Carlsson only scored 12, Mason McTavish scored 17, and even the not-yet-extended Cutter Gauthier only scored 20 in his rookie season. With all due respect to Roger McQueen and Nikita Klepov, the Ducks prospect pipeline does not boast a player with the finishing ability of Selanne either.
Closest league comparable
Even some of the best players of the cap era, have been unable to come close to Selanne's rookie goal scoring record. The closest was the aforementioned Ovechkin with 52. Sidney Crosby scored 39 goals his rookie season, 37 short of Selanne. Connor McDavid only scored 16 in his rookie season, though he only played in 45 games due to an injury. But even if we double McDavid's rookie goal total, he would still be well short of Selanne's 76. Auston Matthews, one of the most prolific snipers of the modern day, scored 40 in his rookie season. Even Macklin Celebrini, arguably the most electric forward since McDavid, had 25 in his rookie year.
Unbreakable
Yes, Selanne may have set the rookie goal scoring record in a different era, particularly in regard to goaltending, but the modern game has leaned into speed and skill, versus the clutching and grabbing of the pre-salary cap era. When the likes of Ovechkin, Crosby, McDavid, and Celebrini are unable to break a goal scoring record, combined with the advancements in stick technology and rules favoring offense, that record might just be unbreakable. Expect Selanne's rookie point total of 132 to fall at some point, but the rookie goal record should remain intact.
