The Anaheim Ducks and their captain, Radko Gudas, were ready to face the music in a revenge game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Monday night. But once the dust settled in the emotionally charged playoff-like atmosphere of Honda Center, the Ducks walked away disappointed and bruised with just a single point, falling to the Maple Leafs in overtime 5-4. And the Ducks may have lost more than just a point in the standings.
Gudas faced the music
Not even three seconds into the game, Gudas had to atone for his actions in their last meeting against the Maple Leafs, and squared off with Max Domi.

Say what you want about Gudas, he took his beating like a champ and did not even bother to throw back at Domi. The Ducks broadcast let the fans know, that Gudas sustained an ankle sprain in the game against the Calgary Flames, and he still went onto the ice, knowing what would happen. That kind of decision takes guts.
But the beatings didn't stop there for Gudas. In the second period, Michael Pezzetta wanted to get his pound of flesh too and roughed up Gudas and gave him a series of crosschecks, well after the play went up the ice.

Jake McCabe also wanted a piece of Gudas and roughed him up in the second period, after Ville Husso had made a save and the whistle had blown.

Mercifully, Gudas and McCabe were both given misconducts and Gudas was able to get away from the chaos and take a breather.
Lost more than just a point
Tough guy Domi, decided to go after Pavel Mintyukov in the second period, who has never been in fight, and rightfully got tossed for his bone-headed decision.

Mintyukov did not play in the Ducks' previous game against the Edmonton Oilers, as he was out with a lower body injury. Thankfully though, Mintyukov was able to play the rest of the game against the Maple Leafs.
Cutter Gauthier on the other hand, was not so lucky. After scoring a goal in the first period, to put the Ducks up 2-0, Gauthier was seen heading down into the Ducks' locker room and did not return to the game.

The Ducks have given the designation of upper body injury to Gauthier, but clearly, something was wrong with his hand/wrist. Gauthier was leading the Ducks in goal scoring too, with 38 for the season.
Leo Carlsson was also injured in the game, as he got tangled up with Troy Terry and William Nylander behind the net.

Carlsson already missed significant time earlier in the season, dealing with abnormal leg injury, that cost him his first appearance in the Winter Olympics for Team Sweden. Carlsson did return to the game though and eventually scored the game tying goal with under two minutes left.
What was the cost?
Gudas paid his dues and got roughed up, even though he was not at 100 percent. Mintyukov was lucky to get away without getting injured from fighting Domi. Carlsson seemed to be alright, after returning to game action, but he is the Ducks number one center, and the team cannot afford to lose him to injury again. The loss of Gauthier really stung though, as not only would he have helped the Ducks secure a win against the Maple Leafs, but with playoffs right around the corner, his absence from the lineup will certainly be felt on the ice and on the scoreboard.
