Anaheim Ducks forward Troy Terry will be out 5-6 months after having hip surgery, per Eric Stephens of The Athletic. As a result, Terry will miss the start of the 2026-27 season, with a potential return to the Ducks lineup, somewhere between November and December. The loss of Terry will not only cause a ripple effect throughout the lineup but may also force GM Pat Verbeek to make a move.

Impact of Terry's abscence

Terry was one of the best forwards for the Ducks, scoring at almost a point per game clip, with 57 points (19 goals, 38 assists) in 61 games. Paired alongside Leo Carlsson, the pair formed a new dynamic duo for this next wave of success in Anaheim. Despite missing portions of the regular season due to injuries, Terry was fifth on the Ducks in scoring and averaged 18:21 of ice time.

Terry's offensive prowess continued in the Ducks' 2026 postseason run, as Anaheim knocked out the Edmonton Oilers in the first round, before eventually falling to the Stanley Cup runner-up, in the Vegas Golden Knights.

Terry finished the postseason with 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) in 12 games, which was third for the Ducks. His average ice time was a shade under his regular season number with 17: 56, but is even more impressive, considering that Terry was playing injured.

Who will step up?

With Terry now confirmed to miss the start of next season though, Beckett Sennecke and Cutter Gauthier will have to step up in his place. Sennecke had 60 points (23 goals, 37 assists) and finished the season as a Calder Trophy finalist. Gauthier had a true break out season as well and led all Ducks skaters in points (69) and goals (41), a mark the franchise had not seen in over a decade. Of the two, Gauthier is the most likely candidate to play on the top line, as his defensive game is more refined than Sennecke's and Gauthier has the ability to play center if need be.

Mason McTavish would be a logical in-house solution to help mitigate the loss of Terry. But with his future uncertain with the Ducks and as his name continues to circle in trade rumors, McTavish likely won't be starting on the top line for the Ducks next season.

What's next?

For Ducks GM Verbeek, there has never been a greener light to be aggressive in free agency or to take a swing on a big trade. The Ducks usurped expectations by not only making the playoffs but also winning a round. The rest of the Pacific Division will not stand idly by though, and with a big name on the market, Verbeek can set the Ducks up for success while Terry is absent and the team can be even more formidable when Terry eventually does return.
