If neither Jack Hughes or Kaapo Kakko are in the Anaheim Ducks future, who should they draft in the first round? Peyton Krebs could be a good candidate.

Barring a massive collapse, or some major luck at the Draft Lottery, the Anaheim Ducks aren’t likely to end up with a top 3 pick in the draft, thus making it unlikely that they’ll get Jack Hughes or Kaapo Kakko. However, that doesn’t mean there’s not quality in the next few picks.

One of those quality players is Peyton Krebs, an 18-year-old native of Okotoks, Alberta. Krebs is a smaller stature player, standing 5’11 and roughly 170-180lbs. Nevertheless, his size doesn’t dictate the style of game he plays.

Krebs is a hard-nosed player who is not afraid to get into the dirty areas of the ice and play a physical game. Not uncommon for him to get involved in plays along the boards and battle for pucks against players who are significantly bigger than him.

Krebs isn’t a player who’s going to go out there and get you 40 goals, but he does have a good shot, a strong wrist shot that’s also very accurate. Krebs is a pass first player, akin to Ryan Getzlaf and also like Getzlaf, is very responsible defensively.

More from Draft

It’s not a stretch to say that Krebs could be the offensive leader of a powerplay, and a first line penalty killer for whichever team he ends up in the coming years. His crisp passing ability makes him a terror for teams, if they commit to him he will find the inch of open space available and will thread the puck through it.

More than his passing, offensive or defensive abilities, the two things that you will see gushed about regarding Krebs time and time again are 1: His hockey IQ. Krebs is regarded as one of the smartest players in the draft, consistently making good plays with, and away from the puck. Kreb’s smart play leads to him having a cerebral approach to the game, shining the brightest when the pressure is on him, and never shying away from being on the ice in crunch time.

The 2nd facet of his game that is brought up time and time again from anyone who watches him is his competitive nature. Among the draft-eligible players this year, it’s not a stretch to say the Krebs is the one who has “Future Captain” written all over him. He brings a great attitude to his team, leads by example and gives it his all any time his skates touch the ice.

Krebs may not have the highest ceiling of the players in this draft, but he is certainly up there, and it’s rare for players with the attitude towards the game that Krebs has, to fail at the NHL level with the other tools that he possesses.
