The Case Against:

Detractors against these two getting their numbers immortalized bring up these few points. One, the 2006-07 Stanley Cup. Yes, it’s true, “The Twins” have their names engraved on Lord Stanley’s Cup. However, while they were big-time contributors to the win, it’s hard to make a case they were “the contributors”. Having the likes of Teemu Selanne, Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, and J.S Giguere certainly helped propelled the Ducks to the Cup. Would the Ducks have won the Cup in 2007 without Getzlaf and Perry? Probably not, but those four other players may have been more valued than them.

So, with the “big 4” of 2007 long gone, what have Getzlaf and Perry done since then? To name a few, they have led the Ducks to the playoffs every year since 2006-07, except for two years, captured five division titles, and have been to two Western Conference Finals. Nevertheless, they have also failed when it looked like they had the pieces to succeed.

Losing during Game 7 in the playoffs for four years straight on home ice, including a West Conference Final, doesn’t help their case. There have been times it looks like they don’t have the “it” factor when it matters most. Should that be held against them though?

Kariya only got the Ducks to the pinnacle once and, they too came up short. Yet, his number will join Selanne in October.
