2015 fifth round pick Troy Terry has been stellar at both the college and international levels. Blake Navarro gives an in-depth look at this Ducks future star.

The Anaheim Ducks have a number of up and coming prospects. With the likes of Sam Steel, Max Jones, Julius Nattinen and Jack Kopacka the Ducks’ future is very bright. But one prospect has won a World Junior Championship, an NCAA Division 1 Hockey Championship and has competed in the Olympic Winter Games. I’m talking about Troy Terry.

NCAA Champion

Terry was selected in the 5th round (148th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The 20-year-old, Colorado native attends Denver University, where he is currently in his junior year. In his first two seasons at DU, he’s scored 31 Goals, tallied 36 assists for a total of 67 points. In the 2016-2017 season, Troy Terry and the Pioneers found themselves in the Frozen Four at the United Center in Chicago. After beating Notre Dame 6-1 in the Semifinal, the Pioneers faced Minnesota-Duluth in the National Championship Game. Terry collected a pair of assists in the game, one of them being on the game winner. Denver won the game 3-2.

International Breakout

Following the Pioneers title run, Terry found himself on the U20 United States Men’s National Team. The team was a heavy favorite to win the tournament and Terry’s performance stood out. He had 7 points in the tournament, 4 goals, and 3 assists, but his legend was established in the Semi-Final game vs Russia.

The game itself was a back and forth affair where both teams found themselves with leads during the game. Russia found the equalizer early in the third period to make the score 3-3, there was no more scoring in the third period or in overtime. The game went on to a Shootout. When Terry stepped up to center ice at the Bell Centre in Montreal the shootout score was 1-0 Russia going into the fourth of five rounds. Terry took the puck, came in with decent pace and shot the puck five-hole on the Russian netminder to tie the shootout at one.

In international play, after the first five shooters, teams can repeat any player they choose to. He would use some nifty stickhandling to score twice more including the game-winner that sent Team USA to the finals against Canada. That game was another back and forth affair for the gold medal, against the home team which also went to a shootout. Terry scored again in the skills competition which was won by the United States.

Olympian

But Troy Terry’s National Team run wasn’t over. In February, Terry was selected to play for the US Olympic team as one of only three amateur players on the squad. Though there was not a run to a medal this time around, Terry still had a great tournament. He had five points, all assists, three of which came in a game vs Slovakia. The United States was eliminated by the Czech Republic in a shootout. Terry shot fourth, tried to again go five-hole but the magic wasn’t there for him. The tournament came to an end.

Terry is currently back in Denver. Playing for the Pioneers again. Although he was drafted by the Ducks, he currently unsigned. Terry can not sign until he is done with college to keep his eligibility. Anaheim has until August 1st, 2019 to sign their up and coming star. Ducks fans hope to one day see Troy Terry play in an Anaheim uniform. Hopefully, that day is soone rather than later.
