3. The Senators lost Daniel Alfredsson in free agency to the Detroit Red Wings and traded Jason Spezza to the Dallas Stars in back-to-back offseasons. The Senators have transitioned to a younger core, naming star defenseman Erik Karlsson captain. Ottawa also has the lowest payroll in the entire NHL. Which youngsters have made the biggest impact for the Senators this season, and who is coming up in the system that hockey fans should be aware of in the near future?

Jack: Youngsters. Hmm. Obviously, the Kids playing on the team have been a treat. There was a lot of talk last season that Mike Hoffman may not score at an NHL level. Six points in 25 games last season will have people doubting you.

Mark Stone‘s skating has always been criticized, but he’s been solid this season as well. Those two have been a treat to watch. Add in Cody Ceci, and I think the Senators have a good young core here.

In discussing prospects, there is one that has me intrigued. That’s Nick Paul. Obviously, Paul is at Team Canada’s WJC camp right now and may make the team. He’s a big kid and has offensive upside. Keep your eye out on this kid, as he likely plays in the AHL next season.
