Anaheim Ducks Recall John Gibson, Assign Frederik Andersen

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

The wait is finally over for the Anaheim Ducks and their fans. After waiting to find out if, or when the Ducks would call up top prospect John Gibson – they finally got their answer.

Anaheim recalled the 20-year old from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania today, assigning Frederik Andersen to the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League in the process.

After an amazing start to his career that also got him a two-year contract extension – Andersen has struggled in net his last six games. After winning his first six contests, he has still won four of his six contests – but it has mainly due to the team in front of him.

A breakdown of his first six games as oppose to his latest six, quite the tale of two stories.

Gibson has a 2.61 GAA average and .915 save percentage so far in Norfolk, his first professional season. He was drafted in the second round, 39th overall in the 2011 NHL entry draft.

One of the hottest young goalie prospects to come along, Gibson burst onto the scene during last year’s World Junior Hockey Championships, leading team USA to the gold medal. However, his year wasn’t done as he also backstopped the MENS team at the World Championships.

With back-to-back games Saturday and Sunday, chances are we will get to see Gibson at some point this weekend.

What do you think of the call-up? Do you like it? Would you have rather seen him ride it out in the minors all year?
