The 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship begins today. For those wondering that stands for the Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship.

This year’s event will take place in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta, from Dec. 26-Jan. 5. The NHL Network will televise all medal-round games and five additional preliminary-round match-ups, airing a total of 15 games (see broadcast special below).

Ducks rookie Devante Smith-Pelly will be making his debut this afternoon, when team Canada plays Finland. Smith-Pelly is an alternate for Team Canada.

This should be a great experience for Smith-Pelly, who will get to play with some top talent around the world. I expect him to come back as a better player from this tournament. He will play a long side some other great prospects such as Florida Panther’s 2011 3rd round pick Jonathan Huberdeau, St. Louis Blues prospect Jaden Schwartz and New Jersey Devils goalie prospect Scott Wedgewood.

I plan to check some of these games out and watch some of the top young stars play.
