The first award issued was the Bud Gallmeier Memorial Trophy/Community Service Award. This is awarded to the Komet who is dedicated not only to the game of hockey, but also to serving the Fort Wayne community. The 2012-13 winner was goalie Charlie Effinger.

Next on the list is the Wiegmann Family “True Komet” Award. This is awarded to the player that best exemplifies the team spirit and has a positive attitude on and off the ice.  The 2012-13 winner was center Brett Smith.

The NOB Brick Award was awarded next. This goes to the most defensive forward on the team. Right winger Jean-Michel Rizk went home with this honor.

This year’s Mr. Hustle is right winger Brandon Marino.

Smith was also awarded the Unsung Hero Award. This award is in tribute to Komet Hall-of-Famers Robbie Irons and Terry Pembroke, given to the player whose hard work, dedication to his teammates and love of the game is in the true spirit of Komet legends Robbie Irons and Terry Pembroke.

Most Improved Player for the 2012-13 season was defenseman Ryan Hegarty.

The Defenseman of the Year went to Tyler Butler.

The final award, and the only one voted on by the players, was team MVP. Marino went home with this honor.

Komets goaltender Jeff Deslauriers has stopped 95.5 percent of the shots he has faced.

North Charleston, SC - The Fort Wayne Komets (28-28-3) had plenty of chances to earn a second point. The South Carolina Stingrays (31-24-6) played liked the K’s did, but with a little more desire and moved into the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference.

First Period:

The Komets showed how much they needed to get the two points starting in the opening frame. Nick Schaus, who was reassigned to the K’s today, netted his second goal for the team this year at the 5:38 mark. The defense couldn’t hold for the whole period as the Stingrays Andrew Cherniwchan notched his ninth of the season with 2:24 left in the first. As the legendary Doc Emerick would say, “There were carryover penalties nor power plays heading into the second.”

Second Period:

The middle frame was a goalie duel was netminders Jeff Deslauriers and Ryan Zapolski stopped the 12 shots each faced in the period. Jamie Milam and Ryan Hegarty each took penalties, while South Carolina had a bench minor for too many men on the ice.

Third Period and Overtime:

The final regulation frame continued the theme of the second as both goalies stood fast. Overtime was no different. South Carolina’s Tyler Johnson was the only one to put the biscuit in the basket in the shootout to win it for the Stingrays.
