Anaheim - The Anaheim Ducks were looking to advance to the second round tonight, but came up short. The Detroit Red Wings came out like they wanted to win. The Ducks just couldn’t find that spark to get in the game.

First Period:

The Ducks seemed to come out a little flat, not matching the intensity of Detroit. It started when Henrik Zetterberg scored off a rebound at the 2:49 mark. The Red Wings came out physical and did not allow the Anaheim many chances until midway through the period. Emerson Etem netted the equalizer for his third goal this postseason just after a power play expired 13:48 in the first. Justin Abdelkader regained the lead for Detroit with a shorthanded goal at the 16:37 mark.

Second Period:

The middle frame was a little more back and forth with Ducks effort. However, effort was not the only thing needed. The Red Wings increased their lead to 3-1 when Valtteri Filppula netted his first of the postseason goal at the 13:45 mark. Matt Beleskey was unable to connect with Teemu Selanne to try and dig the ducks out of their hole.

Third Period:

The final frame saw the Ducks gain a sense of urgency. The boys waited a little too long though. Francois Beauchemin scored a power play goal at the 16:43 mark after angling the puck off of Jonathan Ericsson‘s skate and past Jimmy Howard. Once Jonas Hiller was taken off for the extra attacker, the Ducks turned in their best effort but came up short.

Fort Wayne, IN - 

The first award issued was the Bud Gallmeier Memorial Trophy/Community Service Award. This is awarded to the Komet who is dedicated not only to the game of hockey, but also to serving the Fort Wayne community. The 2012-13 winner was goalie Charlie Effinger.

Next on the list is the Wiegmann Family “True Komet” Award. This is awarded to the player that best exemplifies the team spirit and has a positive attitude on and off the ice.  The 2012-13 winner was center Brett Smith.

The NOB Brick Award was awarded next. This goes to the most defensive forward on the team. Right winger Jean-Michel Rizk went home with this honor.

This year’s Mr. Hustle is right winger Brandon Marino.

Smith was also awarded the Unsung Hero Award. This award is in tribute to Komet Hall-of-Famers Robbie Irons and Terry Pembroke, given to the player whose hard work, dedication to his teammates and love of the game is in the true spirit of Komet legends Robbie Irons and Terry Pembroke.

Most Improved Player for the 2012-13 season was defenseman Ryan Hegarty.

The Defenseman of the Year went to Tyler Butler.

The final award, and the only one voted on by the players, was team MVP. Marino went home with this honor.
