The Anaheim Ducks first round draft pick from 2018, Isac Lundestrom, will be joining the San Diego Gulls for their run to the Calder Cup.

Anaheim Ducks and San Diego Gulls fans have been the recipients of some great news this week concerning the Calder Cup Playoffs. It has been confirmed that Max Jones is healthy and ready to go when the Gulls join the Bakersfield Condors in the faceoff circle on Friday. With the end of the Drummondville Voltigeurs season, Maxime Comtois will also make his AHL Playoff debut.

However, the most recent news to come out of San Diego is the announcement that the Anaheim Ducks first round pick from 2018, Isac Lundestrom, will be rejoining the Gulls roster. After the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championships earlier this season, it was announced that after 15 games with the Ducks and 12 with the Gulls, Lundestrom had made the decision to return to Sweden to finish out the season. However, it seems as though the Swede is more than willing to return to aid his fellow teammates in their flight to the Calder Cup.

More from Prospects

While Lundestrom’s point totals for this season were slightly underwhelming, it must be noted that he jumped around a lot this year. Not only did he play for the Anaheim Ducks, but he made an appearance with the San Diego Gulls, Lulea HF (in the SHL), and he joined Team Sweden during the IIHF World Juniors.

The San Diego Gulls currently already have a roster that should be feared by the other AHL teams in the playoffs, but the addition of Lundestrom is certainly welcome. He adds speed, has proven to be a powerful skater, and has wonderful puck handling skills. He is known for being the kind of player who can change the tempo on the ice, and although he has thrived at center, his ability to transition to any of the forward positions on the ice could prove the be valuable for Dallas Eakins when he is putting together his already crowded lineup.

Lundestrom is certainly an offensively minded forward, and sometimes to a fault. His defensive game needs to see some improvement, and it is quite possible that playing under Eakins could help in his development if he wants to be NHL ready in the next few years.

The San Diego Gulls lineup just got a whole lot more interesting with the news about Max Jones and the addition of Maxime Comtois and Isac Lundestrom. Nevertheless, Dallas Eakins needs to be mindful of his roster and make sure that he’s not making unnecessary roster moves just to make room for the new additions. He needs to stick with what works, and we can only hope that Isac Lundestrom is a part of their Calder Cup equation.
