With the Sharks leading 4-0 late in the third period, Scott left the bench on a legal line change and immediately skated toward Ducks’ forward Tim Jackman to start an altercation.

Scott’s actions violated Rule 70.2 which states that a player cannot execute a legal line change for the purpose of instigating an altercation.

Here is the official wording of Rule 70.2:

"70.2 Legal Line Change – A player who has entered the game on a legal line change or legally from the penalty bench (penalty time has expired) who starts an altercation maybe subject to discipline in accordance with Rule 28 – Supplementary Discipline.A player or players who have entered the game on a legal line change during a stoppage of play, who line up in preparation for the ensuing face-off, and who participate in an altercation shall be penalized under the appropriate rule and will be subject to discipline in accordance with Rule 28 – Supplementary Discipline (a game misconduct is not automatic in this situation unless provided for as a result of his actions in the altercation) — via NHL.com"

According to the NHL Department of Player Safety, Scott is a repeat offender under the terms of the CBA. He was suspended seven games last season for an illegal check to the head of Boston Bruins forward Loui Eriksson.
