Former Anaheim Ducks center Saku Koivu announced his retirement from the NHL yesterday after an 18-year career.

Before joining the Ducks, Koivu spent 13 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. He served as the team’s captain for 10 seasons and was the first European born captain in Canadiens history. In 792 games with the prestigious franchise, Koivu collected 191 goals and 450 assists for 641 points.

Koivu’s time in Montreal is best remembered for his battle with Burkitt’s lymphoma, a type of cancer, before the start of the 2001-2002 season. While undergoing treatments, Koivu was expected to miss the entire season but he returned and helped the Canadiens secure a spot in the 2002 Stanley Cup Playoffs. For his courage and perseverance, he was named the winner of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

Following the completion of the 2008-2009 season, Koivu and the Canadiens parted ways. The Finland native agreed to join the Ducks in the summer of 2009 on a one-year deal and would stay in Anaheim through the end of the 2013-2014 season.

For our Ducks Trivia question this week, we wanted to focus on Koivu’s tenure in Southern California with the Ducks.
