The Anaheim Ducks had been very quiet for the first few hours of the first day of free agency. Well, we just found out that it was the calm before the storm. The Anaheim Ducks have traded Bobby Ryan to the Ottawa Senators for youngster Jakob Silfverberg, prospect Stefan Noesen and a 2014 1st round draft pick.

The report surfaced not too long ago and has been reported by a writer for the Ottawa Sun and Bobby Ryan appears to have confirmed it on twitter:

I think this is a very good trade for not just the Ducks but for both teams. The Senators let go of the greatest player in their franchise’s history earlier today by letting long time captain Daniel Alfredsson sign with the Detroit Red Wings. That left a spot open for a guy to come in and not only put up points but take a leadership role. It just seemed like it was time for Bobby to go. He seemed to need a fresh start and he’ll get one in a great market.

In return, the Ducks are receiving youngster Jakob Silfverberg, prospect Stefan Noesen and a 2014 1st Round draft pick. First off, Silfverberg is an NHL player. He appeared in all 48 regular season games for the Senators tallying 10 goals and 9 assists for 19 points and was a +9. He has very good offensive skill and has shown that he can play fairly well in his own zone. At just 22-years-old, Silfverberg still has some developing to do, but he can grow into very versatile top line scoring forward. Prospect Stefan Noesen was compared to Corey Perry by Sens GM Bryan Murray. He combines offensive skill with some feistiness and competitiveness. He plays with a lot of energy and can develop into a very good 2nd or 3rd line forward. Noesen is a product of the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League and has been a teammate and linemate of Anaheim’s Rickard Rakell. Noesen has wrapped up his junior career this past year and has aspirations of being an NHL player ASAP.

I know it’s going to be tough for Ducks fans to deal with this. Bobby was a fan favorite here and he’ll be a fan favorite in Ottawa. However, this is probably the best return we could’ve asked for at this time. The two players are solid additions and the 1st Rounder is always useful for the Ducks’ franchise, simply based on their recent draft success. Listen Ducks fans, we should like this trade. Well done Bob Murray. The Ducks have so much young talent. I love it.
