Poor Third Downs Komets

The Komets’ Brett Smith tries to screen Cincinnati goaltender Michael Houser during the second period Saturday night at Memorial Coliseum. Smith scored a goal, but the Komets lost 5-2.

Fort Wayne, IN – The Komets started strong, but faltered in the game’s final frame. Things were going well for the new lineup in the first two periods, but four unanswered goals in the third ended hopes of a weekend sweep of the division leader.

Eric Giosa kicked of the scoring for the Komets (20-17-2) on a 2-on-2 rush at the 9:24 mark. Cincinnati (22-12-3) answered three minutes later.

Brett Smith helped to improve the much maligned power play 5:25 into the second for the lone tally in the frame.

The third period did not start off well as the Cyclones scored in the opening minute to tie the contest. Cincinnati then netted two goals in four minutes to go up 4-2. The Komets tried to mount a comeback, but it was only successful in giving up an empty netter.

The two teams will face off again tonight in Fort Wayne at 5:00 PM EST. Audio is available through the Komets website.
