The Norfolk Admirals and the Binghamton Senators squared off Friday night in an Eastern Division showdown. The Senators defeated the Admirals 4-3 in a game that Admirals Head Coach Trent Yawney described as a learning experience for the maturing team.
After a scoreless 1st period both clubs caught wind in their sails. The Admirals scored the games 1st goal from Long Beach native Emerson Etem who snapped out of his 6 game scoreless slump. Andre Petersson equalized on the power play to tie the tilt at 1 midway through the second stanza. Peter Holland capitalized on a Chris Wideman penalty that gave the Admirals a precious one goal lead at the 14:24 mark of the 2nd period. Just minutes later, Senators’ Hugh Jessiman knotted up the contest scoring on Admirals netminder Igor Bobkov. In addition, Mike Hoffman handed the Admirals a late blow scoring with just a minute remaining in the second period. Hoffman’s goal put the B-Sens up 3-2 going into the 2nd intermission.
Etem tallied his 2nd goal of the game when he beat Senators goalie Robin Lenher to tie the tilt at 3-3. The Senators answered with a goal of their own scored by Patrick Wiercioch which proved to be the crowning goal for the Senators sealing their 4-3 victory.
Binghamton outshot Norfolk 37 to 31. Finnish-born defenseman Sami Vatanen assisted on Etem’s 1st period goal and Peter Holland’s power play marker. Vatanen leads all Admirals in points having 9 points in 7 games. Norfolk and Binghamton rematch Saturday 11/3/12 at 7:15 at the Norfolk Scope
