Justin Schultz, Now a Free Agent

Former Anaheim Ducks’ top prospect Justin Schultz is now an unrestricted free agent. The Ducks’ last chance to sign him was a few days ago and it remained clear that Schultz had made up his mind. GM Bob Murray and the Ducks offered Schultz everything could possible offer and Schultz denied.

Some would say Schultz has had his mind made up for months now. Some would say that a team tampered with the Ducks’ rights to negotiate with Schultz. That’s very possible, rumors were going around that the Ducks believed that a team tampered with Schultz and that they may even file tampering charges.

Anyway, there are many teams now going after Justin Schultz. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers all seem to have expressed interest. Why not? Justin Schultz is a game-changing defenseman. It’s really unfortunate for the Ducks. Schultz has the potential to be one of the best offensive defenseman in the entire league. He also can be inserted into a lineup today and make an impact.

This whole situation with Schultz just makes me sick. A team puts enough faith in you to make you one of their top picks and you pay them back by basically wasting their time. It was early on in the season where Schultz sat in with GM Bob Murray while the Ducks were playing in Chicago when Schultz expressed how much he was looking forward to playing for the Ducks sooner rather than later, according to Murray. However, just a few months later, it seems clear that Schultz did not want to play for the Ducks.

So, how do we know that he ever wanted to play for the Ducks? It seems like he lied to Bob Murray back in Chicago. Maybe, maybe not. All I know is that I was a huge Justin Schultz fan, but now, no matter where he goes, I will most likely never applaud him. One of my huge pet peeves is when a player gets drafted by a certain team, but basically refuses to play with them, for example, John Elway with the old Baltimore Colts and J.D. Drew with the Philadelphia Phillies.

I have a feeling that when Schultz makes his first appearance against the Ducks at the Honda Center, that he will not get a very warm welcome. It just infuriates me and seems like a slap in the face. Honestly, I couldn’t have a lower opinion about him. I’m almost glad that he won’t be playing here. For those of you who would say, “Well, he just wants to pick his own team and make more money, faster. Who can blame him?” I say, “You don’t always get to choose what happens in your life. Sometimes, you have to play with the hand you’re dealt, and if you refuse to do that, then you need to grow up and quit being a spoiled little sh*t.” I guess there’s no such thing as loyalty anymore.
