Koivu Signs 1-Year Extension

The 37-year-old, Saku Koivu, will be on the team for at least one more year. He signed a 1-year contract extension with the Anaheim Ducks today. This will be his fourth season with the Ducks. This past season he had 11 goals and 27 assists for 38 points in 74 games. He also was a one of a few players on the Ducks to finish positively in plus/minus at +7 as well as 50 penalties in minutes. The 5’10” Finn was the most effective Duck in the faceoff circle this past season, leading the team in faceoff wins and faceoff percentage, 646 and 52.4 respectively. He also co-led the team in takeaways, 35, was fourth among the forwards in time-on-ice, 18:07, and second on the team in shifts per game, 24.5.

I’m a little surprised, but not at the same time. I felt that the Ducks should pick between either Jason Blake and Koivu on who to re-sign. I thought that would be the best thing to do and give more ice time to players like Nick Bonino and other young players that are coming up through the system. I’ve always been more in favor of having a lot of youth on the team and if I was Bob Murray, as much as I like both Koivu and Blake, I would choose one of them to re-sign and I would re-sign Koivu over Blake. But that’s just me. Still got a long offseason to go until October.

I’m doing some research on an idea for a post or two, which is the best and worst trades in Anaheim Ducks/Mighty Ducks of Anaheim history. There are some doozies, too. That’ll be posted probably within a week.
