Schultz Still Deciding

The University of Wisconsin Ice Hockey Team’s season officially ended this week and Ducks prospect Justin Schultz has a decision to make. He could return to Wisconsin for his senior season, sign with the Ducks now, sign with the Ducks in the offseason, or sign with a team as a free agent in the offseason. The Ducks may own the rights to him, there is a loophole in the current Collective Bargaining Agreement that could allow Schultz to become a free agent in the off season and sign with any team he wants.

His decision is a big one for the Ducks. This kid is a top defensive prospect and would be a big loss if the Ducks cannot get him to sign. Back when I did my top prospect report on the Ducks, I listed Schultz as the Ducks 3rd best prospect, only behind Kyle Palmieri and Emerson Etem. He’s a terrific talent that could be a cornerstone of the Ducks defense with Cam Fowler and Luca Sbisa for a long time.

According to SB Nation Wisconsin Badgers Blog Bucky’s Fifth Quarter, Schultz is in no hurry to make a decision. He wants to finish his spring semester at Wisconsin and is very loyal to his team and university. However, it does seem that he will not return for his senior season, but is not officially been ruled out by Schultz. Time will tell on where Justin will end up, hopefully for the Ducks’ sake he decides to join the team either soon or in the off season.
