Can the Ducks Still Make Playoffs?
By Editorial Staff
The Anaheim Ducks season seems pretty much over. They currently sit last in the Pacific Division, one point out of last place in the conference and the league. They are 15 points out of a playoff spot and there isn’t any sign of things turning around.
With a 9-19-5 record, the Ducks only have 49 games left this season. Not quite at the halfway point but there still isn’t a lot of time. Seeing how tough the Western Conference is when it comes down to the final weeks of playoff season, chances seem even further away.
Over the past 5 seasons, the 8th seed team has averaged around 95 points. The Ducks currently sit at 23 points, with a possible 98 points they could get. Obviously they aren’t going to go 49/49 for the rest of the season, but they would need to ATLEAST 36 games, which would put them at 95 points. This would also only allow the Ducks to lose 13 games…
There obviously is no way to show how the rest of the playoff race will go but if it follows the same way last season did (which is likely), it’s not good news. For example: The Dallas Stars were one of a few teams that came down to the last day to see if they would make playoffs. They either had to win their final game, or the Blackhawks had to lose. Neither happened, causing them to miss playoffs.
The point being that the West always has an intense playoff run, and unfortunately the Ducks don’t seem to stand a chance. Yes, mathematically it is possible, but very unlikely.
