The Crosby Show: How Much Is Too Much?

facebooktwitterreddit

As I’m sure everyone has heard, Crosby returned to the Penguins lineup last night, where he had a pretty good night scoring 2 goals and adding 2 helpers. The NHL has been making a field day of his return.

Don’t get me wrong, Crosby took a nasty hit and I am glad he is able to play again. Would be a shame for such a talented kid to have to end his career way too early. If he were on my team, I’d probably care that he is coming back and would freak out over the game he had.

The problem is, the NHL is taking this too far… Go ahead and take a look at the main page at NHL.com. 6 out of the top 13 stories are all about Crosby. 2 of the 5 top videos below are of Crosby. They TWO SEPERATE videos showing his assists tonight….. is that really necessary??! Why not compile all his goals, assists and whatever else he did from the night into one video?

I know the answer; Crosby is marketable. They want to plaster Crosby’s face everywhere possible to get the NHL more exposure. Admittably, it did work tonight seeing as Crosby was shown on Sportscenter tonight (although it was probably only because the NBA season has been cancelled and they had no “amazing dunks” to air).

I think the NHL needs to give credit to some of the other teams/players out there who are doing great things. The Dallas Stars got a new owner and the Boston Bruins are on a nine game winning streak. Sure, they were mentioned, but completely overshadowed.

The only break i’ll give them is that its his first game back, but I wouldn’t expect it to slow down much more in the coming week. Lets put the Crosby Show on hold for a bit and show some other hockey news.
