Ducks Drop a 3-0 Lead to the Washington Capitals

Well it started as a promising game, with the Ducks up 3-0 over the Washington Capitals. Then after some lucky goals and some bad plays, the game was tied at 3. The Ducks were unable to stop the surging Capitals, and they dropped the game 4-3.

The game itself was tough enough to watch even without the Versus announcers talking non-stop about the Capitals and completely ignoring the Ducks. But it is what it is.

Game Recap:

First Period: The Ducks looked strong in this period. They controlled the puck the majority of the period. Saku Koivu scores his first of the season after receiving a centering pass from Selanne (ANA-1, WSH-0). The Ducks second line looked phenomenal, creating tons of opportunities for the team. Teemu Selanne scores goal #641!! (ANA-2, WSH-0). That goal put Selanne at sole possession of the #13 points for all time goals in the NHL.

Second Period: The Capitals looked more like their usual selves, putting on the offensive pressure. Selanne scores his second of the night when he sent a slap shot past Backstrom (ANA-3, WSH-0).The Capitals put the pressure on and turned the game around. Joel Ward got the Caps on board when Jonas Hiller let a softy go passed him (ANA-3, WSH-1). The dreaded collapse looked to be happening all over again. Hiller decided to try and play the puck with 3 Capitals crashing the net. Needless to say he completely botched in and Dennis Wideman scored (ANA-3, WSH-2). The Ducks were allowing the Caps to dominate, but thankfully the buzzer saved the period.

Third Period: Corey Perry got the first goal of the period on the Powerplay (ANA-4, WSH-2). It looked like that goal would be the winning goal for the Ducks, but it wasn’t enough. Troy Bouwer sent a weak shot in, and Hiller let it go by (ANA-4, WSH-3). Fowler took a bad delay of game penalty, but the Ducks PK easily killed it off. With 42 seconds left, Backstrom roofed the game tieing goal (ANA-4, WSH-4).

Overtime: A bit of back and forth between the two teams with no shots on goal. Backstrom gets the GWG with a wrister that went past Hiller (ANA-4, WSH-5).

Stats:

  • Selanne had a 4 point game tonight (2g, 2a).
  • Selanne is now secured in the 13th spot for most career goals in the NHL
  • The Ducks are now 1-2-2 in their 7 game road trip
  • The Ducks only had 15 shots on goal, the Caps had 40.
  • Jonas Hiller stopped 35/40 shots, Vokoun stopped 11/15

Definitely not the ending we hoped for. The Ducks did look like a much better team compared to their last few performances. It is always the worst to lose a game that you deserved to win, especially when most of the goals were bad bounces and softies that should have been stopped.

But congratulations to Teemu Selanne on reaching yet ANOTHER career milestone!
