October is not only the start of hockey season, but it is also Hockey Fights Cancer month. This season, the NHL has taken more steps to help raise awareness and donations for the cause.
The NHL and NHLPA have partnered up with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Prostate Cancer Canada, ZERO – The Project to End Prostate Cancer and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network to raise funds and awareness. They’re hopes are to top last years donations, which was $1.1 million.
The NHL has also teamed up with members of CongressLife-long hockey player Senator John Kerry (D-MA) will join members of the Congressional Hockey Caucus and Canadian Ambassador to the United States Gary Doer in support of Hockey Fights Cancer awareness month. October 13th will be declared Hockey Fights Cancer day on The Hill.
Each team will also have their own night in which they will promote Hockey Fights Cancer. The Ducks date is October 21st, here is a link to the rest of the teams dates. In addition, Hockey Fights Cancer will give $5,000 to each NHL club to support cancer organizations in their local markets.
Events will include, 50/50 raffles, promotional giveaways, contests and discount ticket offers. Arena suites and tickets will be donated to children’s hospitals and cancer-affiliated programs, and young patients will be involved with puck drops, zamboni rides and player meet and greets

Every season, Hockey Fights Cancer has tons of merchandise for sale. They have shirts for every team, here is a link to the Ducks’ Hockey Fights Cancer shirt. If you’re one who likes to suit up, they have a tie as well. It is a bit expensive, but part of the proceeds do go to various cancer research funds.
U.S. residents can text HFC to 90999 to make a $5 U.S. donation to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Canadian residents can text HFC to 45678 to make a $5 CDN donation to the Canadian chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Keep in mind, it will charge this to YOUR monthly phone bill.
